Fucoxanthin targets a specific type of fat cell known as "white adipose tissue" (WAT), which is the type of fat that accumulates around the midsection of the body, surrounding internal organs. This type of fat cell tends to increase as we age and is connected with middle age diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, not to mention what is often referred to as "middle-aged spread."
Fucoxanthin stimulates a type of "uncoupled protein" (UPC1) that breaks down white adipose fat (belly fat) by dramatically increasing the metabolic rate within the fat cell itself.
The second way fucoxanthin attacks fat is by producing a compound in the liver called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 oil.
